Devastation in Tibet

By Conrad Richter (Updated August 8, 2010)

On April 14 2010, a series of seven earthquakes destroyed Yushu City in Tibet. Over 2,000 people are reported killed and many thousands were injured. It is feared that more have died and and that the final count will be much higher. According to the U.S. Geological Service the quakes ranged from 4.1 to 6.9 on the Richter Scale, but some agencies reported the strongest quake to be 7.1. Photos coming from the area show that the damage to the city of Yushu was nearly total.

The epicentres of the earthquakes were close to Gaden Relief's project areas near Zadoh. Zadoh is a small city about 150 km west of Yushu City, in Yushu Prefecture. Fortunately Zadoh City was largely spared, but many in the city have lost loved ones in Yushu.

Gaden Relief will be involved in the efforts to assist the victims of the earthquakes in the coming months and years. Gaden Relief will re-direct funds from other projects toward more immediate needs such as shelter, medicine and food. A fund has been created for the Yushu earthquake victims.
